AJ823-63001 HP DAT320 USB Internal Tape Drive

Description

The AJ823-63001 is the HP DAT320 internal tape drive utilising the USB interface.

The DDS / DAT (Digital Data Storage / Digital Audio Tape) format was initially developed by a collaboration between HP, Sony and Digital in 1991 and uses helical scanning for recording, the same process used by a video cassette recorder (VCR). If errors are present, the write heads rewrite the data.

Initially DDS tapes had a width of 3.81mm, known as 4mm (Generations DDS1 to DAT72), however the DAT320 now can only accept the new 8mm DAT160 and DAT320 tapes to give a compressed capacity of up to 320GB.

The DAT320 half height tape drive is the seventh and final generation in the DDS family and was manufactured by HP for vendors including Quantum and IBM, for use as standalone internal and external drives targetting the small business market.

The DAT320 offers 160GB native capacity or 320GB compressed capacity on a single tape at transfer speeds of up to 24MBps or 86GB per hour. Native, the drive provides 160GB of storage capacity with a transfer speed of 12MBps

The DAT320 drive employs the same technology as previous DAT products, and uses DAT320 wide
media in order to achieve higher capacities. However, it now only maintains 1 generation backward compatibility and can still read and write data to DAT160 but cannot use any of the traditional 4mm tapes.

The HP DAT family offers HPs unique One-Button-Disaster-Recovery (OBDR) feature providing
customers with the ability to restore their systems with the touch of a single button.

The HP StorageWorks DAT320 tape drive includes hardware capable of performing data encryption
while writing and data decryption while reading, both at full speed. This is only possible with DAT320 GB media.

The DAT320 was available in 68pin Ultra 160 SCSI LVD, USB and SAS interface versions.
