Description
The C1503 is the HP version of the DDS1 2GB internal DAT drive featuring the 50pin SCSI interface.
The DDS / DAT (Digital Data Storage / Digital Audio Tape) format was initially developed by a collaboration between HP, Sony and Digital in 1991 and uses helical scanning for recording, the same process used by a video cassette recorder (VCR). If errors are present, the write heads rewrite the data.
DDS1 DAT tapes have a width of 3.81mm, known as 4mm, to give a native capacity of up to 1.3GB on the 60M tapes or 2.0GB on the longer 90M tapes. (This drive does not support compression)
The HP DDS1 C1503 half height tape drive is a revised model of the first generation in the DDS family and was manufactured by HP for vendors including Sun and IBM, for use as standalone internal and external drives targetting the small business market.
The C1503 offers 2GB native capacity on a single tape at transfer speeds of up to 183KBps or 658MB per hour.
The C1503 drive employs the same technology as previous DAT products, and uses the longer 90M DDS1
media in order to achieve higher capacities. However, it maintains backward compatibility and can still read and write data to both 60M and 90M DDS1 4mm tapes.
The HP DAT family offers HPs unique One-Button-Disaster-Recovery (OBDR) feature providing
customers with the ability to restore their systems with the touch of a single button.
The C1503 was only available in a 50pin narrow SCSI2 LVD/SE interface version.
