Description
The CD160UE-SST is the Quantum DAT160 External tape drive utilizing the USB Interface
The DDS / DAT (Digital Data Storage / Digital Audio Tape) format was initially developed by a collaboration between HP, Sony and Digital in 1991 and uses helical scanning for recording, the same process used by a video cassette recorder (VCR). If errors are present, the write heads rewrite the data.
Initially using DDS tapes with a width of 3.81mm, known as 4mm (Generations DDS1 to DAT72), the DAT 160 now can accept both traditional 4mm tapes as well as the new 8mm DAT160 tapes to give a compressed capacity of 160GB.
The DAT160 half height tape drive is the sixth generation in the DDS family and was manufactured by HP for vendors including Quantum and IBM, for use as standalone internal and external drives targetting the small business market.
The DAT160 offers 80GB native capacity or 160GB compressed capacity on a single tape at transfer speeds of up to 13.8MBps or 49GB per hour. Native, the drive provides 80GB of storage capacity with a transfer speed of 6.9MBps
The DAT 160 drive employs the same technology as previous DAT products, and uses DAT 160 wide
media in order to achieve higher capacities. However, it maintains 2 generation backward compatibility and can still read and write data to DAT 72 and DAT 40 (DDS-4) cartridges. It does this by recognizing the different tapes (wider DAT 160 and the narrower DAT 72/DDS-4).
The HP DAT family offers HPs unique One-Button-Disaster-Recovery (OBDR) feature providing
customers with the ability to restore their systems with the touch of a single button.
The DAT160 was available in 68pin Ultra 160 SCSI LVD, USB and SAS interface versions.
