Description

The TSL11000 is the Sony TSL series DDS4 8 tape internal DAT autoloader using the SCSI interface.

The DDS / DAT (Digital Data Storage / Digital Audio Tape) format was initially developed by a collaboration between Sony, HP and Digital in 1991 and uses helical scanning for recording, the same process used by a video cassette recorder (VCR). If errors are present, the write heads rewrite the data.

DDS DAT tapes used between Sony DDS1 and the DDS4 have a width of 3.81mm, known as 4mm, to give a compressed capacity of up to 40GB.

The Sony TSL-11000 full height tape drive autoloader is the fourth generation in the DDS family and Sony’s second and final DDS Autoloader. It was manufactured by Sony for many vendors including HP, Compaq and others for the small and medium sized business market.

The TSL-11000 uses a 8 tape magazine (8 data tapes or 7 data tapes with 1 cleaning tape) and the autoloader can operate in either sequential or random mode to control the loading of individual tapes.

The DDS4 offers 20GB native capacity or 40GB compressed capacity on a single tape at transfer speeds of up to 4720KBps or 16.9GB per hour. Native, the drive provides 20GB of storage capacity with a transfer speed of 2360KBps

The TSL-11000 drive employs the same technology as previous DAT products, and uses DDS4
media in order to achieve higher capacities. However, it maintains backward compatibility and can still read and write data to DDS4, DDS3, DDS2 and DDS1 4mm tapes.

The TSL-11000 was only available in 68pin Wide Ultra LVD/SE SCSI, interface versions.
